Heart Eyes (2025): A Valentine’s Slasher That Delivers a Murderous Dose of Romance

I love a good slasher movie, and actively try not to get my hopes up every time I watch one because usually I leave feeling a bit disappointed. Heart Eyes was an exception to that disappointment though—even if it wasn’t perfect. Let’s be honest for a second: who in their life hasn’t rolled their eyes at a couple being overly lovey-dovey? For me, though, that’s precisely what got my attention. Heart Eyes takes that notion and flips it on its head by going after the happiest of couples on Valentine’s Day. And let me tell you, it’s a murder fest that’s as wild as it sounds.

I caught Heart Eyes as part of a Valentine’s double feature (the other being Love Hurts), but this one had me on the edge of my seat from the get-go. There’s something irresistibly fun about a slasher that doesn’t take itself too seriously. The film’s premise is simple: a masked lunatic with glowing red eyes emerges every Valentine’s Day to target couples in the most romantic—and absurdly dangerous—places imaginable. The killer’s modus operandi is creative, and the kills? Absolutely inventive. I’m a sucker for creative gore, so every gruesome set piece felt like a little work of art.

One of the highlights for me was the unexpected blend of genres. Sure, you’re in for a good scare, but Heart Eyes also knows how to land a laugh. I was pleasantly surprised by how well the film balanced horror with elements of romantic comedy. The casting couldn’t have been better, especially with two ad execs who share undeniable chemistry. They become unintended targets after a chance encounter on the street—a twist that adds layers of suspicion and intrigue. One character even hints at having ulterior motives, which keeps the tension high even when the plot follows a pretty straightforward, predictable path.

Now, I know some critics have called the film “uninspired” or “formulaic,” but I have to disagree. Yes, the storyline might be a bit predictable if you’re a hardcore slasher fan, but predictability doesn’t take away from the fun. It’s refreshing to see a film that modernizes the slasher genre without losing its tongue-in-cheek charm. In a sea of cookie-cutter horror flicks, Heart Eyes stands out by not taking itself too seriously—except, of course, when it comes to delivering those iconic kill scenes.

In the end, Heart Eyes is a movie that dares to mix love with lethal intent, and it does so with a playful wink. It’s a perfect guilty pleasure for a night when you want your heart to race for more than just the romance on screen. If you’re looking for a Valentine’s movie that’s equal parts thrills, laughs, and gore, then Heart Eyes might just be your new favorite murder flick. Give it a watch—you might find yourself loving every bloody minute of it!

Should You Watch It?

Yes, I had such a good time at this one. If you can handle gore without covering your eyes, this one is brilliant.
