Let me just start by saying: Skincare (2024) is fantastic. Like, “why is no one talking about this movie?” fantastic. I’d been excited to see it since I first heard about it, but sadly, it never made it to a theater near me. Fast forward to me impatiently waiting for its digital release — and wow, was it worth the wait.
Directed by Austin Peters and starring Elizabeth Banks as Hope Goldman (a high-end aesthetician with ambition and zero tolerance for nonsense), Skincare is a delicious blend of thriller, dark comedy, and just the right amount of absurdity. It dives headfirst into the cutthroat world of the beauty industry — sabotage, identity theft, and all — and keeps you hooked the whole way through.
What struck me most was how perfectly paced this movie is. Every scene feels intentional, the tension builds steadily, and I never once found myself checking the time (a rare win these days). The story balances suspense and humor brilliantly – one moment you’re gripping the armrest, the next you’re laughing at Hope’s dry, no-nonsense quips. Elizabeth Banks nails this role, managing to be both relatable and hilariously over-the-top.
The supporting cast is equally strong. Luis Gerardo Méndez plays Angel Vergara, a rival boutique owner who may or may not be behind a string of bizarre events threatening Hope’s career. Meanwhile, Lewis Pullman steps in as Hope’s life coach, Jordan Weaver – an awkward but oddly insightful presence who brings some surprisingly heartfelt moments to the chaos.
But here’s the kicker — Skincare barely made a splash when it was released. How? Why? I genuinely don’t understand. This movie has everything you’d want in a fun-yet-tense thriller, yet somehow it flew under the radar.
If you’re like me and missed it in theaters, don’t worry — there’s good news. Skincare is now available on digital platforms, and rumor has it a streaming release is just around the corner (my guess is Peacock, given Focus Features’ distribution ties). Trust me, you’ll want to carve out some time for this one.
So, if you’re in the mood for a thriller that’s smart, funny, and refreshingly unique…Skincare is the movie you didn’t know you needed. Don’t let it pass you by like a 3-step routine you swore you’d follow but forgot after two days. This one’s worth sticking with till the very end.
Have you seen Skincare yet? If so, let me know if you’re as baffled as I am about why more people aren’t talking about it!
