Football Movies to Get You Ready for Season Kickoff

Football Movies to Get You Ready for Season Kickoff

It doesn’t matter if you live and breathe football or if you only watch one game a year when someone bribes you with nachos, there’s something about football movies that feels like fall. The lights, the jerseys, the band in the background. They’re not really about the plays anyway. They’re about people, towns, and stakes that feel way bigger than the scoreboard.

With kickoff season upon us, I’ve been revisiting some of my favorite football movies. Not because I’m studying plays or stats, but because I want that crisp energy back in my life. These movies are the perfect pre-season warmup, whether you’re hyped for the NFL, college football, or just looking for a little nostalgia.

Remember the Titans
If you don’t tear up at least once during this movie, you might actually be made of stone. It’s more than just a football movie – it’s about unity, leadership, and a team becoming a family. Plus, Denzel Washington as Coach Boone? Elite. This is the movie that makes you believe sports really can change people.

Friday Night Lights
The movie that launched the show, and yes, it still hits hard. It’s small-town Texas football, but really it’s about pressure, hope, and how sometimes life doesn’t give you the ending you expect. The grit, the heartbreak, the community…it all feels like a perfect kickoff-season watch. Bonus: that Explosions in the Sky soundtrack still gives me chills.

Rudy
Look, sometimes you need a scrappy underdog story to remind you why football can be magical. Rudy is the kind of movie where you know exactly what’s going to happen, and you still get goosebumps. It’s not subtle. It’s not flashy. But it’s inspirational in that “I’ll run through a brick wall now, thanks” kind of way.

Varsity Blues
This one is a little messier, a little cheesier, but in the best way. It’s a late 90s football movie that captures the drama of high school sports, the too-much-pressure-from-adults storyline, and of course, the infamous whipped cream scene. It’s basically comfort food in movie form.

Any Given Sunday
If the others are about heart, this one is about the chaos of pro football. Al Pacino’s locker room speech? Iconic. It’s darker, more cynical, and shows the bruised side of the sport. If you want to see football from the business end instead of the nostalgia end, this one delivers.

If you’re a die-hard fan, these movies remind you why you love it. If you don’t care about football, they still work because they’re really about people fighting for something bigger than themselves. And if you just want a cozy way to mark the start of fall? These films are basically cinematic tailgates.
