Do You Read the Acknowledgments? Here’s Why You Should

Let me ask you something: when you finish a book, do you close it right at the last line of the story, or do you keep flipping to see what else is tucked in the back? If you stop at “The End,” you’re skipping one of my favorite hidden gems – the acknowledgments.

The Hidden Bonus Chapter

Acknowledgments are often treated like the credits at the end of a movie: nice, but not necessary. I’d argue they’re more like a secret bonus chapter. They’re where the author drops their guard, thanks the people who got them through the writing process, and sometimes slips in a few unexpected confessions. It feels like stepping behind the curtain and hearing them say, “Okay, here’s the real story.”

A Peek Behind the Scenes

One of the best aspects of acknowledgments is how they reveal the immense amount of work that goes into a single book. There’s the obvious thanks to agents and editors, but then you’ll find mentions of friends who read messy drafts, family who tolerated long hours at the keyboard, even pets who sat loyally through the whole thing. It’s like getting to see the entire village it took to raise that story.

Easter Eggs and Surprises

Sometimes authors use this space to drop little nuggets for loyal readers: inside jokes, hints about future projects, or funny asides that make you feel like you’re in on something. I’ve laughed out loud at an acknowledgment section before. I’ve also teared up when an author thanks someone who inspired a character, or when they dedicate their success to a loved one they lost. It’s raw and human in a way the polished narrative can’t always be.

The Human Side of Publishing

We spend so much time with books as finished products that it’s easy to forget they were made by a person sitting at a laptop, wrestling with doubts, deadlines, and plot twists of their own. Reading acknowledgments reminds me that authors are humans first. They worry, they lean on their support systems, they celebrate small wins. It makes me appreciate the story I just read even more.

Why I Never Skip Them

Personally, I always read the acknowledgments. To me, they complete the experience of a book. Sometimes they’re funny, sometimes they’re heartfelt, sometimes they’re long-winded, but they always feel like the author is speaking directly to me, letting me in on something personal. And honestly? More than once, the acknowledgments have been the reason I picked up the author’s next book.

What About You?

So, do you read them? Or are you a “close the book as soon as the story ends” kind of reader? Next time, give the acknowledgments a shot. You might be surprised by how much you enjoy that last peek into the author’s world.
