I picked up The Tenant knowing very little about the story going in, and by the end, I was completely hooked. Freida McFadden has a way of pulling you into a world that feels both familiar and unsettling at the same time. This is a story that starts quietly, almost comfortably, but steadily ratchets up tension until you’re on edge from page one to the last sentence.
The story follows a young woman navigating a new rental situation that quickly turns strange. What I loved most about the book is how much of the suspense comes from character interactions and the small, subtle details that hint at something darker beneath the surface. McFadden does a great job making you care about the protagonist’s life, her choices, and her relationships so that when the tension escalates, it lands harder.
The pacing is impressive. The book isn’t rushed, but it doesn’t linger unnecessarily either. Every chapter feels purposeful, dropping clues, building tension, and occasionally giving moments of relief that make the scares hit even harder when they come. It’s that balance of slow-building unease and sudden shocks that kept me turning pages late into the night.
What really makes the book shine is McFadden’s ability to mix suspense with relatable, human moments. The protagonist’s fears and doubts are ones I could understand and empathize with, even as the situations she finds herself in teetered on the extreme. That mix of realism and tension makes the story feel personal, and it makes the suspense feel earned rather than contrived.
There were moments where I thought I knew how things would go, only for the story to twist in ways I didn’t expect. The twists are satisfying without being overdone, and the ending lands in a way that feels both inevitable and surprising. It’s the kind of conclusion that leaves you reflecting on the characters long after you’ve closed the book.
If you like suspenseful, character-driven stories with just the right mix of tension, intrigue, and a few unexpected twists, this is a book worth picking up. It’s engaging, smartly paced, and offers enough surprises to keep even seasoned suspense readers on their toes.
