Welcome To Derry – Episode 1

Welcome To Derry – Episode 1

I pressed play on episode 1 of Welcome to Derry thinking I had the vibe figured out before the opening credits even rolled. I was fully prepared for clown sightings and balloon drama. Instead, I ended up spending most of the episode with my jaw hanging open for completely different reasons. This premiere wastes no time reminding you that Derry is a messed-up place long before a clown crawls out of a sewer.

Right from the start, the town feels off. People act strange. Normal moments twist into something uncomfortable. I kept waiting for a breather, and it never really came. And while Pennywise is not front and center yet, there are plenty of other horrors stepping into the spotlight. I did not expect the show to lean into creature moments so early, but here we are. Some of the visuals are genuinely nightmare fuel in a way that feels new for this universe.

What surprised me most was how quickly the tone shifts. One minute, everything feels almost normal, and then something happens that makes you sit up a little straighter. There is a real sense of danger in the air, and the show does not feel shy about pushing boundaries.

The cast is already carrying a lot of weight. They feel like real people who are just trying to survive a town that hates them a little. Their fear does not feel dramatic. It feels tired. Like they can sense that something underneath the sidewalks is humming, and they are trying really hard to ignore it. That kind of fear gets under my skin.

What really hooked me was how this episode expands the lore. It is not just Pennywise. It is the town. The history. The way tragedy grows roots. You can feel the writers saying look, there is more going on here than you ever realized. I love that. Prequels can feel stale if they only repeat the hits, but this one is already doing something different.

Who should watch this: If you liked the IT films but always wondered what else lurks in Derry, this is for you. If you like horror that throws weird creatures and quiet unease in the same bucket, you are going to have fun. And if you enjoy being left with questions, you will be very happy.

Will I keep watching? Absolutely. The episode ended, and I immediately wished the next one was available. If we are already getting new monsters and fresh angles on the evil in Derry, then I cannot imagine what is waiting later in the season.
