Runaway Groomsman by Meghan Quinn

Every summer, I inevitably find myself reaching for a certain type of book. I don’t necessarily want an emotionally devastating literary masterpiece or a thriller that has me questioning every character by chapter three. Sometimes I just want something that’s fun, easy to fall into, and entertaining enough that I lose track of time for a few hours. Runaway Groomsman by Meghan Quinn fits that category perfectly.

If you’re looking for a quintessential beach read, this one absolutely deserves a spot in your beach bag.

The premise alone is enough to catch your attention. Meghan Quinn has a knack for taking a simple romantic comedy setup and giving it just enough of a twist to make it feel fresh, and that’s exactly what she does here. The concept is playful from the very beginning, setting the stage for plenty of awkward encounters, undeniable chemistry, and the kind of romantic tension that keeps you turning pages even when you have a pretty good idea of where everything is headed.

And yes, you probably will know where it’s headed.

The story isn’t trying to reinvent the romance genre, nor does it need to. Romance readers often pick up books because they enjoy the familiar beats that come with the genre. The fun comes from seeing how the journey unfolds, not necessarily from wondering whether the couple will end up together.

That’s where Runaway Groomsman succeeds.

Even though I could predict many of the story’s major turns, I never found myself bored. There’s a big difference between a predictable story and a boring one, and Meghan Quinn clearly understands that. The characters have enough personality, the dialogue has enough humor, and the pacing moves quickly enough that I was happy to keep reading, even when I suspected exactly what would happen next.

Too often, predictable romances begin to drag because they rely solely on the destination instead of making the journey enjoyable. Here, the moments between the big romantic milestones are entertaining enough that I never felt like I was simply waiting for the inevitable ending. Instead, I found myself enjoying the banter, the awkward situations, and the gradual evolution of the relationship.

Sometimes slow burns can feel frustrating, as though the characters are avoiding obvious conversations simply to extend the page count. That never really happened here. The relationship develops at a pace that feels natural, allowing both characters room to grow while steadily building anticipation. By the time everything finally comes together, it feels earned rather than rushed.

The book is also incredibly easy to read.

I don’t mean that as a criticism. In fact, I think it’s one of its biggest strengths. This is the kind of novel you can pick up after a long workday, while sitting by the pool, or during a weekend getaway without feeling like you need to keep track of complicated timelines or dozens of interconnected storylines. It flows effortlessly, making it easy to read “just one more chapter” until you suddenly realize you’ve finished half the book.

Not every book has to challenge you emotionally or leave you contemplating life’s biggest questions. Sometimes it’s enough to simply be entertained, and Runaway Groomsman delivers exactly that. It’s light without feeling shallow, funny without trying too hard, and romantic without becoming overly dramatic.

Will this become my favorite romance of all time?

Probably not.

Did I have a genuinely enjoyable time reading it?

Absolutely.
