A few months ago, I heard about The Texas Cheerleader Murder Plot—maybe on the radio or scrolling through Reddit. I can’t pinpoint where, but it intrigued me enough to add it to my “must-watch” list. On a cold January afternoon, I finally pressed play.
I was excited for this one. The premise? A Texas mom is so desperate for her daughter to make the cheer squad that she plots murder. It’s peak 90s absurdity! What’s not to enjoy?
The documentary starts strong, laying the groundwork for the scandal. The trailer hinted at a cheer mom ready to kill, so I expected layers of intrigue or shocking twists. Unfortunately, the story doesn’t deliver much beyond its initial premise.
Despite its sensational setup, the documentary lacks the compelling depth or twists you’d expect from a true crime tale. There’s not enough substance to warrant a full documentary.
Whether justice was served in the end feels secondary because the outcome doesn’t justify this much screen time. In today’s era of endless streaming options, this one lands low on my recommendation list.
That said, if you need background noise or something you won’t mind falling asleep to, this documentary fits the bill. It’s not terrible, but it’s far from must-watch material.
