Every year when summer starts creeping closer, I find myself reaching for the same type of books. Give me a beach chair, a cold drink, and a light romance with characters I actually enjoy spending time with, and I’m a happy reader.

That’s exactly what led me to First-Time Caller by B.K. Borison.

I wasn’t looking for anything particularly groundbreaking. I wasn’t searching for a dark thriller, an emotionally devastating literary masterpiece, or a book that would fundamentally change my outlook on life. I simply wanted something fun.

And that’s exactly what I got.

Now, let’s get the obvious out of the way. This book is predictable.

But here’s the thing: I don’t think that’s a criticism when it comes to a romance like this.

Sometimes reading a romance is a little like ordering your favorite dessert. You know roughly what you’re getting. You know where it’s headed. The enjoyment comes from the journey, not from being shocked by the destination. If every romance ended with the main characters filing paperwork and agreeing to remain acquaintances, we’d all be pretty disappointed.

So yes, I could see where things were going.

I also had a great time getting there.

What stood out most to me was how likable the characters were. In a lot of contemporary romances, I find myself loving one character and tolerating the other. Or worse, actively wishing both of them would spend some time apart and work on themselves.

That wasn’t the case here.

The characters have flaws, make mistakes, and occasionally frustrate each other, but they felt believable. Even when they weren’t making the choices I wanted them to make, I understood why they were making them. Their imperfections felt human rather than manufactured solely to create drama.

The premise itself requires a little suspension of disbelief. If you stop and analyze every detail, there are definitely moments where you might raise an eyebrow. But romance readers know that’s part of the deal sometimes. The important question isn’t whether every plot point could happen exactly as written.

The important question is whether you’re having fun.

I was.

This is one of those books that feels incredibly easy to read. The pages move quickly, the dialogue flows naturally, and before you know it, you’ve read far more than you intended. It’s the literary equivalent of saying, “Just one more chapter,” and then realizing you’ve accidentally stayed up past midnight.

Not that I’ve ever done that.

One thing I kept thinking while reading was how easily this story could translate to the screen. In fact, I spent a good portion of the book mentally casting actors for various roles. The characters have the kind of chemistry that would work well in a movie adaptation, and the overall vibe feels tailor made for a cozy streaming rom-com.

If someone announces a film version tomorrow, I’ll be first in line.

This book never tried too hard. It knows exactly what it wants to be and executes it well. It’s charming, entertaining, and full of characters you’ll root for from beginning to end.

Not every book needs to be complicated.

Sometimes you just want something that leaves you smiling.

If you’re putting together a summer reading list and looking for the kind of book you can toss in your beach bag, read by the pool, or fly through on vacation, First-Time Caller is a fantastic choice. It’s fun, sweet, engaging, and exactly the kind of read that reminds me why I enjoy picking up a good romance every now and then.

Will it surprise you?

Probably not.

Will it make your summer reading a little more enjoyable?

Absolutely.
