Over the years, while I still enjoy video games, I’ve stopped feeling the need to play them the moment they’re released. Honestly, it’s freeing. Taking my time means I can be more selective and focus on games I truly want to experience. Somehow—surprisingly—it took me years to finally get around to playing It Takes Two. On one hand, I regret waiting so long. But on the other, it was absolutely worth it.
It Takes Two follows Cody and May, a married couple on the brink of divorce. Thanks to a bit of unexpected magic, they’re transformed into dolls and forced to work together to navigate a wild, imaginative world and (hopefully) make it back to their real bodies. Going in, I expected a heartfelt but heavy-handed story packed with life lessons. Instead, I found something much more balanced—charming, emotional, and, to my surprise, genuinely hilarious.
From start to finish, I had an absolute blast playing this game. If you have a friend or partner willing to team up, I highly recommend giving it a go. While I can’t speak to online co-op, my experience playing local split-screen was smooth, and the smaller screen space was far less frustrating than I expected. It took us about 10-12 hours to complete, and I’d definitely suggest keeping an eye out for the hidden mini-games—they’re randomly placed but just as fun as the main story.
For a game that won Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2021, It Takes Two absolutely lives up to the hype. I originally picked it up during a PlayStation sale, but after playing, I’d gladly pay full price. If you’re looking for a game to spend a cold or rainy weekend with, this one is well worth your time.
