I’ve reached the point where, if I need a palate cleanser between heavier books, I instinctively start looking to Ali Hazelwood.
If you’ve followed my book reviews for a while, you’ve probably noticed that I’ve been working my way through her catalog this summer, and I don’t see myself stopping anytime soon. Her books have become my go-to recommendation when someone asks for a romance that’s light, funny, and engaging without feeling completely disposable. They have enough emotional stakes to keep you invested, enough humor to keep the pages turning, and they almost always leave you closing the book with a smile.
After finishing The Love Hypothesis, I knew Love, Theoretically was moving toward the top of my reading list. While the books exist in the same universe, you absolutely do not need to read them in order. There are a few familiar connections for longtime fans, but each story stands comfortably on its own, making this an easy place to jump into Hazelwood‘s work if you’re new to her writing.
Once again, she delivered.
At the center of the novel is Elsie Hannaway, a theoretical physicist trying to build a career in academia while juggling the uncertainty that comes with temporary positions and the fierce competition for permanent jobs. When an opportunity finally presents itself, she discovers that one of the people involved in the hiring process is Jack Smith, a physicist she believes played a significant role in damaging her mentor’s career years earlier.
Naturally, she expects the worst.
That setup launches the familiar enemies-to-lovers dynamic, but like Hazelwood’s strongest novels, the tension comes less from exaggerated hostility and more from misunderstandings, assumptions, and two intelligent people trying to navigate situations where neither has the full picture. The romance unfolds naturally because both characters are given room to grow without completely reinventing themselves to earn a happy ending.
I’ve mentioned before that this is something I particularly appreciate about Hazelwood’s writing. Too often in this genre, one character spends the first half of the novel behaving terribly, only to receive a last minute redemption arc that magically fixes everything. Here, the conflict feels rooted in miscommunication and differing perspectives rather than outright cruelty, which made it much easier for me to root for both characters from the beginning.
Comedy is incredibly subjective, and romantic comedies sometimes fall into the trap of trying so hard to be quirky that every joke feels manufactured. Love, Theoretically avoids that problem remarkably well. The dialogue feels quick without becoming exhausting, the banter lands naturally, and many of the funniest moments come from personality clashes rather than punchlines. I found myself smiling throughout the book, and more than once I actually laughed out loud, which isn’t something I say very often.
Hazelwood also continues to carve out a niche that feels distinctly her own by setting her romances within STEM fields. In less capable hands, the scientific backdrop could easily become window dressing, existing only to make the characters seem interesting. Instead, academia becomes an essential part of the story, shaping the pressures, insecurities, and ambitions that drive nearly every major decision.
Academic careers are often portrayed as prestigious destinations, but Love, Theoretically spends time exploring how uncertain that journey can actually be. Temporary contracts, funding concerns, professional politics, and the constant need to prove yourself all become meaningful parts of Elsie’s story rather than simple obstacles placed in front of the romance. Even if you’ve never stepped foot inside a physics department, those broader themes of career uncertainty and self worth are incredibly relatable.
That balance is one of the reasons these books continue to resonate with me.
Yes, there is romance. Yes, there are steamy scenes. If that’s what you’re looking for, you’ll certainly find them here. At the same time, the relationships are supported by characters with careers, ambitions, friendships, and personal struggles that exist outside of the romance itself. The love story feels like one important part of a much larger life instead of becoming the only thing that defines either character.
The emotional moments never linger so long that the story loses momentum, while the lighter scenes arrive exactly when they need to. Every time I thought I knew where the plot was headed, another layer would emerge that added a little more depth to the characters and kept me invested in how everything would ultimately unfold. None of the twists are earth shattering, but they don’t need to be. They’re simply effective at reminding you that first impressions are rarely the whole story.
If I were ranking Ali Hazelwood’s books, Love, Theoretically would comfortably sit near the top of the list. I still have more of her catalog to work through, so perhaps another favorite is waiting for me, but this one reinforced exactly why I’ve enjoyed this summer reading streak so much.
Her novels share a recognizable formula, yet each one introduces enough fresh characters, workplace dynamics, and emotional conflicts that they never feel like simple copies of one another. There is a familiarity to her storytelling that’s comforting rather than repetitive, making each new book feel like returning to a favorite vacation destination while still discovering something you hadn’t noticed before.
If you’re searching for the perfect beach read, something to toss in your carry on, or simply a novel that offers a welcome break from darker thrillers and heavier literary fiction, Love, Theoretically is an excellent choice. It’s charming, genuinely funny, emotionally satisfying, and just substantial enough to leave you feeling like you got more than a simple romance.
At this point, I’m almost hoping Ali Hazelwood eventually writes one I don’t love, if only to prove she’s human. Until then, my summer reading streak remains very much intact.
