M3GAN 2.0

Let’s just get this out of the way: I liked the first M3GAN better. That movie knew exactly what it wanted to be: campy, creepy, and just self-aware enough to have fun with the premise without tipping into full parody. It was horror that knew it was horror. With M3GAN 2.0, I kept waiting for that same electric weirdness to kick in, but instead, it kind of…drifted? The horror was muted, the tone shifted hard into sci-fi mystery drama territory, and while I still had a good time, it didn’t really compare to the first in the way I wanted it to.

Yes, the original characters are back. Yes, the story technically continues. But this almost felt like a spin-off written during a group project where half the team saw the first movie when it came out, but not since. It’s not bad, and there are still moments where M3GAN’s unnerving deadpan made me genuinely laugh out loud, but it just didn’t feel like the same universe. And if we’re being honest, it lost a bit of the edge that made the first one so unexpectedly fun.

Now, let’s talk about that scene. You know the one. I’m not even going to describe it, because if you’ve seen the movie, it’s already burned into your brain. Just know I audibly said “Why!?” in the theater. Not in a fun way. In a “who okayed this and how do I make it stop” kind of way. There’s pushing boundaries, and then there’s whatever that was. I’m not saying I need to be warned about everything, but I would’ve appreciated a heads-up that my soul was about to leave my body for 47 seconds.

That said, there are things to like. Some of the deeper AI lore they start to play with is interesting, and I could see a future installment making something pretty smart out of it (if the rumored third movie really does swing back toward its horror roots). There’s also a theme about creation vs. control that had potential, except it never really lands because it’s constantly in competition with the movie’s need to be quippy and slick. Pick a lane!

What did I think? I liked it. I had fun. But I also kept wanting to fast-forward to the version of this movie that leaned a little more into the freaky doll-gone-wrong chaos that made the first one such a surprise hit. This one feels more polished, but also less bold…and honestly, I missed the bite.

Who should watch it? If you loved the first one, you’ll probably want to see this just to stay caught up. It’s still watchable. Just go in with your expectations set closer to “techno-thriller with mild sass” than “killer robot horror with a side of absurdity.” And if the third movie does happen, fingers crossed they let M3GAN go full unhinged again.
