The Righteous Gemstones Season 4 Review: A Final Amen

Well, they did it. The Righteous Gemstones wrapped its final season, and while Season 4 may not go down as the show’s best, I’ve got to hand it to them…they knew when to bow out. And that, in today’s world of endlessly dragged-out TV, feels almost holy.

Let’s be real: this season had its moments. The unhinged family dynamics were still fun to watch, and I’d absolutely follow Judy into a poorly lit parking lot just to see what happens. But there was something about the pacing this time around that felt… off. Maybe it’s because the stakes never quite matched the high drama (and hilarity) of earlier seasons. Maybe it’s because Baby Billy toned it down a notch, and I never asked for that. Or maybe I’m just still emotionally hungover from Season 3’s chaos and expected the final season to match it shot for shot.

That said, I didn’t not enjoy myself. The Gemstone clan still delivered the wild Southern gospel chaos we’ve come to love. There were cringe-laugh moments, some solid zingers, and just enough surprise emotional resonance to remind you these characters, bless their messed-up hearts, do care about each other in their own twisted way.

But more than anything, I respect the decision to call it. There’s a sweet spot in television, the place where a story has run its course but hasn’t yet jumped the shark, and The Righteous Gemstones hit that mark. Could they have squeezed out another season? Sure. But would it have added anything new? Probably not. And I’ll take a show that ends a little early over one that limps toward irrelevance any day.

Also, I can’t wait to see what Danny McBride cooks up next. Whether it’s more televangelist satire, another dark Southern comedy, or something completely off the rails, I’m in. The man knows how to create messy, magnetic characters, and I’ll follow them into any pulpit, swamp, or dive bar he leads them.

So farewell, Gemstones. Thanks for the wild sermons, the family feuds, and the soundtrack that will never leave my brain. Amen.
