“The Monkey” (2025) Review: A Fun and Frightening Ride
Horror fans, rejoice—The Monkey (2025) is here, and it’s an absolute blast. Directed by Osgood Perkins and based on Stephen King’s short story, this film delivers a perfect balance of gruesome horror, absurd deaths, and surprisingly sharp humor. Whether you’re in it for the scares or the laughs, there’s something in The Monkey for everyone.
A Killer Monkey with a Sense of Humor
From the moment the film opens, it’s clear this isn’t just another predictable horror flick. In fact, I was caught off guard when Adam Scott was the first actor to appear on screen—it was an unexpected but welcome surprise.
One of my favorite moments was when the eerie toy monkey used the thermostat to spell out “HI”—a simple yet chilling way to signal its return to Hal. That little detail set the tone for how playfully sinister the movie would be.
Laughs, Gore, and Over-the-Top Deaths
While The Monkey leans into horror, it doesn’t take itself too seriously. The deaths are over-the-top in the best way possible—just when I thought the last kill was as ridiculous as it could get, the next one took it even further. It’s a rollercoaster of insanity, and I loved every second of it.
Despite all the carnage, the film is genuinely funny. The repeated use of the phrase, “We have to make like eggs and scramble,” tells you exactly what kind of fun ride you’re in for. The filmmakers clearly understood the absurdity of the premise, and instead of overdoing it, they struck the perfect balance between horror and comedy.
A Cast That Brings It All Together
Another highlight was the characters. Even the ones we weren’t necessarily supposed to like played their roles so well that I thoroughly enjoyed watching them. The performances added depth to the film and made the ridiculousness of the story even more entertaining.
Easter Eggs for the King Fans
As a Stephen King adaptation, The Monkey sneaks in plenty of Easter eggs for fans of the horror master. I didn’t actively search for them during my first watch, but I’ll definitely keep an eye out when I inevitably rewatch it.
Final Thoughts
The Monkey (2025) is a wildly entertaining horror-comedy that delivers absurd kills, unexpected humor, and a fantastic cast. If you love movies that don’t hold back on the gore while still making you laugh, this is a must-watch. Whether you’re a Stephen King fan or just looking for a horror movie that stands out from the rest, The Monkey won’t disappoint.
