Every once in a while, I come across a book that reminds me why it’s worth ignoring my first impression of a cover.

The Road to Tender Hearts by Annie Hartnett is a perfect example.

I’ll be honest, this cover did absolutely nothing for me. In fact, I spent months assuming it was one of those steamy Western romances that seem to have their own dedicated shelf in every bookstore. That’s not typically my thing, so I kept passing it by. But after seeing enough people recommend it, I finally gave in and decided to see what all the fuss was about.

I’m glad I did.

What I got was not at all what I expected. Instead of a romance-heavy story, I found a surprisingly funny, heartfelt novel about family, grief, forgiveness, and the strange ways people find their way back to one another. At its core, this is a road trip story involving a group of people who are connected by blood but, in many ways, are true strangers. As they travel together, they’re forced to confront old hurts, unresolved grief, and the complicated relationships that have shaped their lives.

And somehow, despite touching on some heavy subjects, the book manages to feel warm and hopeful.

The biggest surprise for me, though, was the cat.

Nobody prepared me for the fact that the cat would completely steal the show.

Every family story needs a breakout star, and in this case, it was absolutely the feline member of the cast. There were multiple points where I found myself more invested in what the cat was doing than what some of the humans were up to. If you’re an animal lover, consider yourself warned: you’re probably going to fall a little bit in love.

Some scenes genuinely made me laugh, followed by moments that caught me completely off guard emotionally. More than once, I found myself getting unexpectedly teary-eyed. Not because the book is relentlessly sad, but because it understands something important about family relationships: the people who drive us the craziest are often the people we love the most.

The title also turned out to be something very different from what I expected. Without spoiling anything, I spent a good portion of the book assuming I knew exactly what “Tender Hearts” referred to. It turns out I was completely wrong. When I finally understood the reference, it added another layer of charm to a story that was already winning me over.

Was this a five-star read for me?

No.

But that’s mostly because I reserve five stars for books that completely consume my life and leave me incapable of thinking about anything else for days afterward.

This wasn’t that kind of book.

What it was, however, was a thoroughly enjoyable read that consistently left me happy to pick it back up. The characters felt real, the emotional moments landed, and the story delivered exactly the kind of warmth that I think many readers are looking for right now.

If you’re searching for a great summer read but aren’t interested in the endless parade of spicy romances that tend to dominate beach-read lists, The Road to Tender Hearts deserves a look. It’s funny, touching, occasionally heartbreaking, and full of characters who feel like people you might actually know.

And did I mention there’s a fantastic cat?

Because there is.
