This Weekend’s Picks – May 10, 2025

This week was a long one. Between a lot going on at work and in my regular life, I consistently felt several steps behind. Unfortunately, doesn’t look to be slowing up soon, so I’m already bracing for a slowdown in terms of what I can get to. MOVIES

Shadow Force – Kerry Washington and Omar Sy star as elite operatives Kyrah and Isaac, who defy their shadowy employers by having a child.

Fight or Flight – Josh Hartnett plays exiled agent Lucas Reyes, who attempts to redeem himself by capturing a high-value target on a flight from Bangkok to San Francisco, all while evading numerous assassins aboard the same plane.

BOOKS

The Original Daughter by Jemimah Wei released May 6. This debut novel tells the story of an unlikely sisterhood in Singapore at the turn of the millennium, exploring themes of societal pressure and betrayal.

Second Life by Amanda Hess released May 6. In her debut memoir, journalist Amanda Hess examines the experience of raising a child in the social media age, offering a candid look at modern parenthood.

What My Father and I Don’t Talk About, edited by Michele Filgate, released May 6. This anthology features 16 essays tackling complex father-child relationships, aiming to encourage reflection on familial bonds.

TELEVISION

Poker Face Season 2 premiered May 8 on Peacock. Natasha Lyonne returns in this crime comedy-drama, with guest appearances by Cynthia Erivo, Katie Holmes, and John Mulaney, adding fresh twists to the detective series.

Forever premiered May 8 on Netflix. This romantic drama follows a couple who meet in college and attempt to hold onto love as life throws every possible challenge their way. Told over multiple decades, the series explores how relationships evolve — or unravel — over time.
