This Weekend’s Picks – April 5, 2025

How are we already in April? It seems like the first several months of the year flew by, but every week that goes by, the closer we get to those summer blockbusters we look forward to every year.

As a side note, any longshot 2026 Oscars predictions? I’ve seen a few titles thrown out there like Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another but other than that, not as many way way way too early murmerings as previous years.

Anyways, enough of that – here’s what to dive into this week:

Movies

A Minecraft Movie – I will admit, I have never played Minecraft. And yet, I may have to actually watch this movie. If for no other reason than the cast looks hilarious. I saw that it was getting review-bombed yesterday (so take those rotten tomatoes scores with a grain of salt) but hearing from others that it’s pretty cute and fun for both adults and kids.

Hell of a Summer – I’ve been seeing previews for this one a lot recently, and I anticipate it being a bit of a comedic take on Friday the 13th. I could be totally off base (I try to go in as blind as possible), but given how funny the trailer is, I expect this one to be fun. Finn Wolfhard co-directed and co-wrote, so I’ll be checking it out just to support our Stranger Things kid.

The Friend – I don’t know much about this one other than it stars Bill Murray and a dog. Honestly, that’s all you probably need to know to decide whether it’s worth you seeking out or not. I’m on the fence as to whether this will be one I see on the big screen, but it’s getting some good initial feedback.

The Luckiest Man in America – This one snuck up on me as I for some reason thought it was releasing during the summer. And, unfortunately, none of the theaters closest to me are running it. Looking like it’ll be one that I wait to come to streaming but if it’s playing near you I hear it’s great. If you ask me, if Walton Goggins is in it, it’s worth it.

Freaky Tales – Short of starring Pedro Pascal, I know next to nothing about this one. The premise looks promising, but it’s also not playing anywhere near me so I’ll likely wait to hear about how it’s received and then hope it opens up near me or wait until I can watch from my couch at home.
