As you probably know, I watch a lot of movies. I typically see many in theaters, but I also watch plenty at home. We Live in Time was an exception—I actually watched it on an airplane. When I boarded my Delta flight and saw it listed, I was excited to check it out since it’s not available for streaming yet. I’m not the biggest Andrew Garfield or Florence Pugh fan, but I’d heard enough positive buzz to give it a shot.
That being said, I never really got into this one. I’m starting to think slice-of-life movies just aren’t for me. I recently watched Past Lives and felt similarly—great performances, strong storytelling, but I kept wondering, Why should I care? This film felt like it was deliberately pulling on my heartstrings, but it never fully pulled me in. Maybe watching it in the middle seat of a crowded airplane, sandwiched between two people who also didn’t seem thrilled to be there, didn’t help. But even then, I struggled to feel truly invested in the characters’ lives.
I do have a lot of respect for the storytelling. The nonlinear timeline was handled well, giving the film a unique structure without becoming confusing. In fact, the way the story unfolded made me appreciate it more, even if I wasn’t emotionally drawn in. However, there were a few subplots that felt underdeveloped, and even days later, I’m left wondering why certain elements were included at all.
If you enjoy slice-of-life films, or if you’re already interested in We Live in Time, it’s worth checking out. It’s not a bad movie by any means—it does some things really well, and the cast will undoubtedly draw in a lot of viewers. But for me, it felt a bit overhyped.
