Some books make you laugh. Some make you cry. Some make you text your best friend at midnight because you need to talk about that one scene immediately. Yours Truly by Abby Jimenez manages to do all three and somehow still leaves you with that warm, floaty feeling like you just had the best kind of dessert. You know the one. Chocolatey. Probably molten.
This story follows Dr. Briana Ortiz, who is having a year. Her divorce is still fresh, her brother is in need of a kidney transplant, and the last thing she needs is some broody new doctor waltzing into her ER and snatching up the promotion she had her eye on. Enter Dr. Jacob Maddox, the human embodiment of awkward politeness, who immediately gets off on the wrong foot with Briana by, well, existing in her general vicinity.
But surprise. Jacob is not a jerk. He just has social anxiety and struggles with new situations. Once he figures out that Briana thinks he is the worst, he does something unexpected. He writes her a letter. Like, an actual letter. On paper. With feelings.
What unfolds from there is a slow-building, deeply satisfying romance that, at least at first, mostly takes place through letters, texts, and awkward but sincere hallway encounters. The epistolary element? Perfect. More romances should bring back letter writing. It is peak swoon.
Briana is one of those characters you want to grab a drink with. She is smart, fierce, and trying so hard to hold everything together even though her world is kind of on fire. Jacob is sweet and soft in a way that feels rare in romance heroes. He is not here to sweep her off her feet with grand gestures. He is here to show up when it matters.
Their chemistry is believable and never forced. The way they open up to each other, especially through writing, feels honest and incredibly tender. It is also just… refreshing. There is no unnecessary drama or weird miscommunication. These are two grown-ups figuring it out together and being honest about their feelings, even when it is messy.
And speaking of feelings, Abby Jimenez nails the mental health representation here. Jacob’s anxiety is handled with so much care and nuance. It is a part of him, but not his whole story. Watching him navigate it while still showing up for Briana makes him not only relatable but incredibly lovable.
Also, shoutout to the supporting characters. Briana’s brother is a gem. Her friends are funny and loyal. And Jacob’s family? Just the right amount of quirky and supportive. Everyone in this book feels like they live in a real world, not just a plot device vending machine.
The writing is classic Abby Jimenez. Snappy, funny, and filled with those tiny emotional gut punches that sneak up on you just when you think you’re safe. One minute you are laughing at an ER-related disaster, and the next you are tearing up because someone finally said the thing they have been too afraid to say. It is a rollercoaster in the best way.
Yours Truly is a romance that is warm without being cheesy, emotional without being heavy, and funny without ever losing its heart. If you love slow burns, letters, and heroes who actually communicate like grownups, this one should be at the top of your list.
